About Mairangi Atelier

Kia ora, we are Hester and Thomas, a French–Pākehā couple based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington.

Mairangi Atelier began when Thomas started sketching the birds he saw outside our window. Those drawings soon became lino prints, and over the last two years he has carved and printed more than twenty birds and sea creatures from around Aotearoa.

Each print is carved and printed by hand in small editions. Alongside prints we also produce a small range of greeting cards and children’s T-shirts featuring selected designs.

Mairangi Atelier is a small independent project that we run alongside family life, slowly growing the collection one print at a time.

Process

Each print is produced in small batches in our Wellington home studio

Pencil sketch of a bird on gray paper, accompanied by a red and black pencil and a torn blue Eraser.

1. Sketch

The design begins as a drawing onto the lino block.

Relief carving of a bird, possibly an eagle, on a gray stone slab with scattered stone shavings around it.

2. Carving

The lino is carved by hand, removing the areas that will remain white in the final print.

3. Printing

Ink is rolled onto the carved block and printed onto paper using a manual press.

Multiple sheets of paper hanging on lines with photographs of a cartoon blue ostrich wearing a red hat, falling or upside-down, attached with clips.
A young boy with blonde hair is standing outdoors in a green, grassy area, holding onto a large tree branch with both hands, looking to the side with a thoughtful expression.
A cardboard box containing folded baby T-shirts, including one with a blue bird print and the text 'TITIPOUNAMU'.
Two adults, a man and a woman, at an art booth with framed bird-themed artwork, while two children are drawing on a ground board in front of the booth under sunlight.
Multiple white cards with a blue fish illustration and the words 'TAMURE' and a signature, attached to a wire with small clips.
A cluttered desk next to a window with a view of trees and mountains outside. The desk has papers, a lamp, a cardboard box, and some glass jars. There are blue and white illustrations of animals hanging on the wall.
